Entry into Prayer – Week Three.

It is suggested you view the Church Service of 30 August as an introduction to the weekly series of “Weekly Prayer Points” around The Lord’s Prayer that can be found on “Weerona Recorded Church Services” page.

Welcome to this third week of exploring prayer through word (in various form) and song

Christmas Song : by Dave Matthew’s Band

A couple of months ago I put together a playlist of music to use for Elijah at night time, so asked my collective hivemind for suggestions. My brother, James, suggested a song by the “Dave Matthew’s Band”, which is one of his favourites, but not really one I’ve paid much attention too. Most of their music is a bit heavy for my taste, but in honouring James’ suggestion, I at least felt I should listen to it. Turns out to be a truly beautiful musical narrative of Jesus story- with the essential word at its heart. I hope you are equally surprised and moved as I was. For some reason, despite Elijah’s music being on random play, this song plays uncommonly often when I’m feeding him in the middle of the night.

            Story

Because Sunday’s worship pointed us towards a number of picture story books, this week I’ve chosen something different for our mid-week prayer story. I first read this story by Charles Dicken’s about 20 years ago. I liked it at first, but when I read it aloud (more than once) it came alive. It’s not a well-known piece from Dickens, but I share it with you in the for you, which you can access here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qqmwtjx672pyd2a/zoom_0.mp4?dl=0

            Modern Words of Prayer

Friday the 4th of September

            Music from the Past

Pure Joy and Praise to God!!

This is one of my favourite pieces by Mozart. Once upon a time I even tried to sing it! While it’s words (word) is simple, the music says so much more than that. May it bring you to prayer in praising God with joy and thanksgiving.

            Poem x 2

I’ll record these for on FB, but the poetry and faith of John Donne is a gift that still speaks to us today, nearly 500 years after he was writing.

MEDITATION XVII: Devotions upon Emergent Occasions

‘No Man is an Island’ by John Donne

No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man’s death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Holy Sonnets: Death, be not proud by John Donne

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell’st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally And death shall be no more;
Death, thou shalt die
